Yes, HarBUG put in a bid for a new Campus to Wantage cycle route from a £5m Science Vale Cycle Infrastructure grant. The County Council have been working on the route but, as usual, landowner issues are the sticking point.
We should be able to give more information soon, come to the A.G.M. to find out more.

    Cheers

    Kevin W – HarBUG Chair.

Good news, the Wantage Road cycle lane scheme was approved by the County Council today. There now follows a period for detailed design followed by construction.

The farm track across to Bury Lane from Upper Farm Road has no public rights of way. It is private land.
A HarBUG member did speak to the farmer about HarBUG cyclists using the track to avoid having to use the A34. He was happy for us to use the track, for cycling, but there was no formal agreement.
The farmer has had problems with illegal Hare coursing in the fields and does not want walkers and especially those with dogs on the track.
My guess is that with the new houses that have been built on Chilton Fields, residents have assumed that this track is a right of way and have been using it as such. The farmer is re-asserting his rights as landowner, he has also put up signs saying ‘Private Property, Keep Out’.
This is not a good result for HarBUG and we may need to speak to the farmer again to see if he is still willing to allow us to cycle across.

This survey for Highway incidents affecting cyclists has been extended to the 5th November. Please have a look at the questionnaire and help shape the roadworks teams future priorities w.r.t. cycling in Oxfordshire.

Thanks to everybody who joined in the Campus Cycle to Work Day last Wednesday, especially the ride leaders and others who organised the event.
We had 75 participants take part including several new or returning cyclists. This was a pretty good number since we caught the tail of Storm Aileen and the overnight weather was bad. Luckily the sun came out on the day although the wind was still strong.
If you have any ideas for future events or how to promote cycling on the Campus, please contact us at web@harbug.org.uk.

    Regards
    Kevin Wilkinson

Andy – Do you have any photos of the new shelter and the name of the County Councillor for that area? HarBUG can send an email to the County Council to see why they placed this shelter here without any thought about users of the path. Please send info. to web@harbug.org.uk.

Hello, we are still looking for volunteers to lead the escorted rides from Didcot and Grove. The Grove ride will meet with the Wantage ride to cycle in together.

The Cycle to Work days are run to encourage people to try cycling to work and the escorted rides are an important part of this.
If can help out, please contact me: chair@harbug.org.uk

The new cycle repair stands are being installed today. You may have noticed one being installed next to the RAL goods inwards turn on Fermi Avenue. Another is being installed at the Harwell pavilion, next to the Thomson Avenue entrance and one on the new road off Road 8. They are well equipped with tools and a pump. If you are having a lunchtime walk they are worth having a look at. This is a good facility for Campus cyclists.

HarBUG did bring this to members attention when the Winnaway was re-opened.
On a post dated the 31st January we wrote:
“The path now allows you to cycle a lot faster, especially down the hill. Please slow down and be courteous to other users of the path when passing, give them a cheery thanks. Use your bell to let other users know you are there. As a cyclists you are obliged to give way to pedestrians and horses on Bridleways (although it is not a Bridleway we should act as though it is). For more information about passing horses, always tricky, see the following British Horse Society web page: http://www.bhs.org.uk/safety-and-accidents/common-incidents/cycles”

Some good news, the County Council has stopped the Wantage Road Cycle Path, in Didcot, being built to the current design. They have asked HarBUG for our views on an alternative design for the cycle route. If you have any ideas please let us know at chair@harbug.org.uk

The lower section is due to be finished when the work on the new Chilton Interchange slips has been completed. There has been some surface material ‘thrown down’ over the past week but, hopefully, this is not the finished surface. HarBUG has a meeting with the County Council in a couple of weeks, this is one of the points we will be bringing up.

Thanks to everybody who joined in the cycle to work day today and thanks to the ride leaders who bought the group rides in. We have had a lost key handed in. It is a single Yale style key on a keyring. Please contact chair@harbug.org.uk to claim it. If nobody has claimed it by lunchtime it will be handed to the Harwell pavillion office.
