    I received the same email reply from the County Council about Icknield Way. Let OCC know about any punctures, also email chair@harbug.org.uk so that we can get the full picture. Also if you see anybody repairing a puncture, please stop and let them know about contacting OCC.

    In addition I requested that the same dressing is not used on the Winnaway and they replied:
    ‘I note your concern regarding the possible use of surface dressing on The Winnaway footpath. As mentioned in my email to you dated 15 January, surface dressing has been successfully used on other cycle tracks in the county and it is disappointing that this particular application has suffered from problems which could have been easily avoided. We are currently investigating possible surface treatment options for the Winnaway footpath, one of which is surface dressing, taking into account the lessons learned on Icknield Way.’

    Hello,

    Does anybody know whether the contractors carried out the remedial work on the Icknield Way? If so has it made any difference or is everybody keeping clear of the path?
    I have had reports that cyclists at the weekend were still getting punctures but I would like to know reports from HarBUG members before I get back to the County Council.

    The original Science Vale cycle map is the on-line Sustrans map in the link. So there is no officially published map at the moment. We can only put on known missing parts and corrections. We should try to get it as accurate as possible and we may be able to use the information to push the County Council to complete missing links and improve crossing points etc. For example in Grove there are paths which are officially shared use paths but they are not marked or signed, if they appear on the map then we can argue that they should be signed and marked.

    We need to get the police to have a ‘word’ with this Gold Kia driver. Where did this morning’s near miss happen?
    Has anybody else had a problem with this car, even if you have just thought it was one of those things that happens now and then? We also need to get a second confirmed number plate identification.
    We don’t have to put up with this kind of behaviour and if we work together we can get the police to take action.

    Yes, HarBUG was involved with the consultation of Great Western Park in 2008. In particular we were concerned with changes to the Wantage Road from Didcot to Harwell.
    We asked for ‘on-carriageway’ cycle lanes from the Foxhall Road roundabout through to the A34 bridge. pointing out that this was a main cycle communting route to the Harwell Campus. We even looked at the feasibility with a County Council Traffic Engineer, on the ground. The traffic light junction was shown on the consultation documents and we asked for advanced stop boxes to be included connecting with the cycle lanes. There was very little detail of the junction on the consultation documents i.e. position of islands etc.
    What we found out later, in 2011, was that everything had been planned, designed and signed off in 2007, a year before the public consultations.
    This junction has been used as an example of how disjointed planning is in Oxfordshire and the need, in future, to look at the bigger picture. The County Council has admitted that the junction is a poor design for cyclists.
    What we have got is what the developers and their traffic planners decided we are getting and told the council this is what’s going to happen.
    This doesn’t help us and for the short term I think we are stuck with it , although we will try to get changes (perhaps when the new secondary school is built next to the UTC).
    Things are going to get worse though, the next pointless cycle path is along Wantage Road. this involves widening the current footpath on the North side, this was in the 2007 plans and we seem to be unable to stop it.

    The reply from OCC Highways:
    The current road closures are for 9 weeks. During the first two Chilton Road will be open, so OK for cycling to work.
    For the following 7 weeks, Chilton Road (and Hagbourne Hill Road) will be closed to all traffic including cyclists.
    This is the first phase of upgrading Hagbourne Hill and there will be more works later in the year.
    I have contacted OCC again to see if they could at least keep the route open for cyclist during am & pm rush hour, but they are sticking to their guns and not allowing any traffic during the 7 weeks.
    The alternatives are the Winnaway (but likely to be more traffic than normal through Harwell village) or from Upton, using the Lynch Way to Chilton – not suitable for all bikes.

    I have just phoned Highways Enquiry team about this subject. The Chilton Road out of Upton will not be affected but the junction at the top will be. I have asked them whether they can keep a strip open so that cyclists can still use the route. They will be getting back to me to confirm whether they can do this. I will let you know the latest.

    Just a couple more thoughts:
    Hagbourne Hill; what happens when Didcot traffic starts queuing at the Chilton Interchange first new roundabout or to get to the Fermi Avenue roundabout. Will they be tempted to try and use the Sustrans 544 track as a cut through to the Campus? We have seen this happen before.

    Steventon / Featherbed Lane lights; There will be additional traffic in that area from the Tesco.com warehouse that will be built at Milton Hill Business Park. Although the shift patterns will miss peak times there will be HGV supplies in and many van deliveries out.

    I managed to catch up with the Hagbourne Hill farmer. It was the farmer who has carried out the ‘repairs’ on the Sustrans route and Lynch Way (and most likely the ones by the A34 underpass as well). He doesn’t seem keen to do any further repairs although he did mention that he thought the Thames Water contractors will be repairing the track as part of their re-instatement works. I will contact the contractors to check that they will be resurfacing this section as well as the rest of the potholes. In the meantime the only thing to suggest is that we make / clear a route through the stones.

    Thanks for the update.
    I have emailed Oxfordshire Countryside Services to see if they are carrying out the repairs or can shed some light on it.

    Please don’t forget the exhibition of the new road schemes at Steventon village hall today. If you cycle from Abingdon via Steventon you may want to look at the plans as they contain zero cycle provision. HarBUG did raise this several months ago when planning was considered for the Tesco dotcom centre. We thought it would be logical to look at the whole stretch from Steventon lights to the Packhorse pub.
    Anyway, the more cyclists show up in person the better our case for inclusion of cycling provision.
    Some good news though, in yesterday’s Government announcements about money for growth £4.9 million has been allocated to Science Vale Cycle network improvements.

    Quick Update:
    I have visited Black & Veatch (Thames Water subcontractor) at the reservoir site, this lunchtime.
    The person I spoke to did not know of any repairs being carried out but will asked around. If they did ‘dump the stones’ he agreed to rectify the damage i.e. level, cover with fine grit and roll.
    I tried to catch the farmer but he was out, I will try again on the way home.
    Meanwhile, watch out especially on the downhill, you will need to use the grass verge to get around the stones.

    There was one incident where a cyclist went through the path and pulled straight onto the Diamond Ring Road in front of a car, according to the incident report. There was no accident but it was recorded as a near miss.
    Harbug suggested putting a ‘give way’ sign up or a bollard to slow cyclists down but this was rejected as it is a footpath.
    This is a shortcut through to Diamond from the RAL main gate so I think it will still be used. Maybe a ‘Cyclist Dismount’ sign will signal to cyclists to slow down. i think most cyclists have similar views on ‘Cyclists Dismount’ signs.
