HarBUG News – March 2020

There appears to have been a problem with registration for new users. We think this is now fixed, so please do register!

Hello, hopefully we have seen the back of the winter weather and with the days and traffic queues getting longer you may want to get back cycling to work or try cycling to work this year. To help you on your way we have a Cycle to Work Day on Wednesday 1st April, please see below for more details and more news about cycling to and around the Campus.

Cycle to Work Day Wed 1st April

We have a Campus Cycle to Work Day on Wednesday 1st April, which is a great way to try cycling to work with one of our easy paced escorted rides to the campus from Didcot, Wantage or Grove, suitable for all fitness levels.

If you already cycle to work, it is great event to meet other cyclists who commute to the campus.

There will be a free breakfast for cyclists, sponsored by UKRI-STFC, for any Campus staff who cycle to work on the Cycle to Work Day. Vegetarian option available.

More details will be published in the next couple of weeks but please make a note of the date.

In order to run the event we need ride leaders to accompany the escorted rides. If you can help or would like more details please contact chair@harbug.org.uk

Wantage New Route Update

Work is due to start, in early May, on the new cycle route to Wantage via Ginge Brook Bridge. Below is a brief  update of the project:

  • Landowner issues have been resolved and signed off.
  • Byway restrictions are in force to close the route to motorised traffic.
  • Vegitation clearance has started, ready for construction works.
  • Detailed designs have been completed and are now in review before procurement.
  • Ginge Brook bridge contractor has been appointed; design completion by the end of March; construction starts late June.
  • Main route construction starts early May.
  • Route will be closed to all during construction.
  • Completion before March 2021.

Didcot Mini-Holland

A couple of weeks ago the Government announced £5b funding of bus services and cycling routes. The cycle route funding was linked to mini-Holland schemes. Part of the Didcot Garden Town project was to create a mini-Holland scheme in Didcot.

HarBUG has contacted South Oxfordshire district council to see if Didcot is in a position to bid for this funding. We should be, Sustrans produced a report about a mini-Holland scheme and the County Council are close to publishing an LCWIP for Didcot. If Didcot can be ready with ‘shovel ready’ projects when bidding begins we should be in with a good chance of receiving funding.

The district council are looking to setup a meeting for Didcot cycling – HarBUG will be represented.

Icknield Way Update

We have received an update from Magnox about the ongoing closure of the Icknield Way along the top of the Campus at the ‘Tank Farm’ site.  They have applied for the closure and diversion to be extended until summer 2022 in order to complete their works.
