Just a quick reminder that the Chilton Road Closure consultation closes tomorrow (Friday 19th Feb) at noon.
Please support the full closure of the road to all motorised traffic with a signal controlled crossing of the A417.
The online form does not take long to complete.
Thanks, your support does work as seen this week with the Valley Park planning application deferment.Regards

HarBUG Chair.adminMemberJust a quick update on the Valley Park Roundabout – In a Vale of White Horse council planning meeting last night it was decided to defer giving planning permission to Valley Park. One of reasons for deferring permission was to see if the developers and County Council have explored other designs for the roundabout and put their findings into the public domain. HarBUG spoke at the meeting, as an objector, but it was clear nobody was happy with the roundabout design except for the developers (they just want to get on building) and the County Council officers. This is a good outcome but there is still work to do. We will be asking for an independent Traffic Engineer / Consultant to look at the junction and what can be achieved. We want to avoid this pause being a reason for the developers and County Council to justify their current design rather than looking at other ideas.
Thanks to all HarBUG members who sent in an objection, it really did make a difference.

HarBUG ChairadminMemberNo, we don’t know whether Sustrans will adopt the new route and divert NCN 544. Keep using it until we get notified otherwise which maybe when the permissive track needs to be repaired and the landowner wants Sustrans to pay for it.
adminMemberThe Cow Lane / Townsend pedestrian – cycle bridge has always been part of the Valley Park plans and will connect into Great Western Park as well as down to the Science Bridge on cycle paths. However commuting cyclists (and all cyclists) want the most direct convenient route and this is via the B4493 from Didcot. The roundabout design is not fit for purpose and needs to be re-designed. Please object and stop this roundabout.
adminMemberThere is a bus turning and waiting area at the end of Fermi Avenue, opposite the entrance to MRC. Buses are supposed to wait there until their scheduled departure time to avoid this situation i.e. blocking the road and this has been working OK. It looks like this particular driver did not know about this procedure.
adminMemberThe A34 ‘Bridge to Berkshire’ Path is a live project and we posted the following update was in HarBUG newsletter in February:
Highways England have reviewed the proposal for the path from the A34 Chilton Interchange to the West Ilsley Interchange with Kier, the design consultants. They have agreed for the project to go to the next stage. This is good news, although it is still a long way from getting the final go ahead. The next stage is negotiations with landowners and we know that this can stop a project.
I have asked Kier for a further update ahead of the HarBUG AGM on Wed October 9th. Come along to the AGM to get the latest on this project and other cycle projects in the Science Vale.
adminMemberNote: If you are signing up for the Campus Bikes with Donkey Republic you will need to use your work email as the account name otherwise the Campus Bikes won’t show up on the app.
adminMemberThe HarBUG response to the Icknield Way Access Restriction consultation is available on the HarBUG website home page.
Please respond to this consultation as we expect objections to the proposal by motor vehicle off road groups (4x4s and trail riders).
The consultation ends on Friday 13th September. Also don’t forget the Oxfordshire cycling survey which closes this Friday (6th September).
adminMemberHello,
We are looking for ride leaders for Wantage and Grove for next week’s Campus Cycle to Work Day. If you are a regular cyclist and would like to help encourage others to try and cycle to work please volunteer to lead a group from either Grove or Wantage. Both groups meet and combine into one group at Wantage.
Please contact me at chair@harbug.org.uk to volunteer or for more information.
Thanks.Kevin Wilkinson

HarBUG ChairadminMemberHot off the press news – tomorrow at the Cycle to Work Day breakfast we can reveal draft drawings for the new Campus to Wantage cycle path. Come along to have a look and give feedback.
The weather forecast tomorrow is dry but cold, so ideal for a hot bacon (or veg) bap and tea or coffee. Enjoy your cycle to the Campus and see you at the pavilion.

HarBUG ChairadminMemberApologies for not sending this sooner, I have been on leave.
HarBUG has received an email from Gallagher Estates stating that they are unable to allow access across to Bury Lane for cyclists. They have requested that the signs should be respected and not to cycle on the tracks across the field.
Gallaghers have stated that they are liaising with Highways England on a potential new path.
I will let Highways England and Kier know that we no longer have a route we can use south of the Campus, it may help our case for building the path.
In the meantime, please do not cycle across the field, we will be relying on the landowner to sell some land to Highways England for any new path and, as we know, landowners can be difficult and scupper projects if they want to.
Thanks
Kevin Wilkinson
HarBUG ChairadminMemberHi, the land / field in front of the school is private land owned by Harwell Campus (UKAEA) and there are signs on the perimeter hedge stating that there is no public right of way. The lady with the dog has no right to walk her dog and is legally trespassing.
There are no rights for the public to cycle on the land either, however you are not public, you are working on the Harwell Campus and you are using Harwell Campus land to get to and from the …..Harwell Campus.
We (campus cyclists) don’t have any rights to cycle on that land and the Campus could fence it off or build on it as they wish but using it to get to work is a reasonable use in the meantime.
It may be worth politely pointing out those facts to the lady with the dog but I have a feeling it will fall on deaf ears.
Another point to be careful of is that, in the past, UKAEA have fenced off and blocked access to land if there is any talk of access rights or rights of way etc.
Keep riding on the land unless Harwell Campus tell you / us otherwise. -
