This is such a shame to hear. I was wanting to use the ebikes across site and maybe home and back as I live near the station but I think I will stick to other forms of transport for now. I am put off using them at all right now. Let’s hope matters improve fast.
harryMemberOk, I hope to be there.
harryMemberOk, thanks. I’ll note it and hope to meet up.
harryMemberHi Mike, and others.
Id be interested to join if work allows. Im in Didcot and I mainly ride on Saturdays mornings if you fancy a ride from here. Im mainly mtb.
Thanks.
harryMemberHI, does anyone know if Peep-o-day lane from Abingdon is now open to use? If not, then what is the diversion alternative like?
Thanks.harryMemberAlthough, I think the idea of the bus stops was to help slow the traffic in general which seems to be working. I do sympathise with you a lot, but in my experience, remonstrating with a driver hardly ever ends well no matter who is right or wrong. Reporting them with camera footage on the other hand….
harryMemberHi, do you mean the chalky drop/climb near Roden Downs (as noted on OS maps)? If so, some mountain bikers enjoy that part because of it’s technical features. It is good to improve safety of course, some may say resurfacing that stretch with hardpack could make it dull, others would say it would make it usable. It’s a natural trail after all.
harryMemberI think both of you have fair points to not using the cycle lane and I agree with some of them. However, i do use the cycle lane and I share it with pedestrians and other cyclists in the same considerate way I share the road when I drive my car and share it with cyclists.
Also, I’ve found that no pedestrians shout and swear at me as I weave in and out of them at 5-10 mph. Whereas, on the road I have been verbally abused and threatened just for riding along the road.
Horses for courses I guess. I am not concerned about keeping my average speed as high as possible during the last half mile. I am more concerned about what is on the pudding menu in R22.
My point is, whatever we as cyclists prefer to do, other people are always going to have their own opinion which may be voiced in an agressive manner. That is their problem not ours whether we are on the cycle path or not.
If we didn’t have a cycle path but was in fact a cycle lane attached to the road then would the minority of aggressive car drivers behave in the same manner?
harryMemberI would also be interested in bike maintenance particularly gear and brake cable and adjustment/replacement, and perhaps wheel bearings and mountain bike fork servicing. Good idea.
harryMemberHi, a friend of mine has started to use this puncture alley and punctured today with a tiny piece of flint even though he used the mud track all the way along apart from the final section to get through the fencing area into RAL. Unfortunately, due to a high number of punctures he hasnt got a puncture repair kit here today, and Ive also run out of patches. Does anyone have a spare puncture kit or a sticky patch that he could have to get him home please? He works in Diamond.
I have offered a mountain bike inner tube but he is on hybrid with tiny skinny wheels.
Many thanks.harryMemberMy opinion is for me as a rider to be aware that that situation may happen and therefore be prepared to stop quickly, or slow down from 25-30 mph as I approach that area if cars are coming down behind me and spot a car coming up.
My worry is if I am on my bike and at 15/20 mph and going to the left of the traffic calming island in the bike lane, and then having a car going to the right of the island at 40mph crunching me up onto the curb as they didnt realise I had a cycle lane to go through and so didnt realise I was there. But again, I need to be prepared I guess.
harryMemberIt’s great that cycling has been taken into consideration at the roundabout. I would be interested to know if a curb can be laid between the segregated cycle bypass and the road to divide the cycle lane and the road. I am concerned that traffic turning right out of Thomson Ave will drift onto the cycle lane. This would be the same for traffic going straight on at the roundabout and driving around right turning traffic into Thomson Ave. The curb would stop encroachment and also keep cyclists in the cycle lane and not taking the racing line. Perhaps safer for cyclists and for drivers.
Also, the bus stop should perhaps be moved further along the road and away from the junction but I suspect cost is the main factor as to not doing this.
I dont use the path at the bus stop to ride along as I go along the path by the pavillion. It is safer, quieter, and not a bump in sight from damaged path.
harryMemberHi Gary
I’ve reported a driver once to Police using the onilne 101 form at http://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/reptcr/reptcr-repform
The link to the form is at the bottom. They added the car rego to the ANPR system and would stop the driver for a friendly chat if seen. However, perhaps I agree with Bob personally. Knocking on the car drivers door may or may not result in a happy outcome. If the driver is in the belief he is correct and has worried you on 3 occasions then I doubt he will see reason.
Other option is to buy or loan a helmet cam.
harryMemberSorry to hear about your incident Kevin. Good to know you and the bike are ok. I see you quite often on your bike and know you are always lit up and hi-visd!!
Just a thought about Rowstock, would traffic lights help there to calm that section down? I agree with Didcotbob as I am a rider and motorbiker and eye contact with the driver is really key. If you haven’t had that eye contact then you back off a bit and brace yourself for anything that hopefully will not happen.
