I agree. These are hardly an inclusive design and also do not cater for bikes with trailers or cargo bikes. Will the upper tiers be usable with heavier e-bikes?
NPMemberI think alaniwi is referring to the new east/west footpath being created to link GWP and Valley Park. I’d be concerned that it lacks sufficient width for a bridleway, the plans I saw involved a 2m wide path lined by fencing. It links 2 urban zones of several thousand houses, so pedestrian usage will probably be high. It’s very unsuitable as a bike route at things currently stand.
NPMemberThe new entrance on the Winnaway is being investigated as a breach of planning.

NPMemberI like the zebra, pedestrians should be able to cross on demand and not have to wait for a signalised crossing. The toucan on the A4185 seems to constantly refuse to change until all the cars have gone past.
I’d be all in favour of making it a Tiger crossing (ped and cyclist zebra) though, and the same goes for the crossings at the top of Fermi Avenue as well. Don’t even need a TRO for that now.
NPMemberAs a follow up to Winnaway improvements, is there anything that could be done about the bottom section between the end of the path and the A417 junction. It’s manageable when you can see the potholes, but a bit of a gamble when it’s wet.
The other issue I’ve seen is the turn right onto the top of the Winnaway from the A4185. Cars don’t expect cyclists to turn right as there is no warning that the path even exists other than some paint and I’ve seen some near misses with cars overtaking while turning (despite timely signals). Would there be any scope for a small traffic island (like on the pedestrian crossing sections of the A4185) to protect the turn?
NPMemberPlease make an effort to visit the site and add comments, or even just add your vote to the ones already there. There are already a good number of pro cycling suggestions and the more the merrier.
NPMemberJust an update: That’s Blenheim Hill open to motor traffic again. It was nice while it lasted!
NPMemberIt would be great to see an extension of the Oxford bike hire scheme to the train station.

It’s worth a read!
NPMemberI went past last night. There’s a 5m long section of pavement, with low kerbs either side, that takes you past the roadworks. Almost never any pedestrians there so you probably won’t need to dismount. I passed about 10 cyclists coming the other way along the closed road so it’s being well used. Enjoy it while it lasts.
NPMemberMore info here from the local county councillor. http://www.harwellparish.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/09.06.16-Blenheim-Hill-Grove-Rd-closure-article1.pdf.
The road will definitely be closed to motor traffic (5.5m deep hole in it!). You should be able to get past with a bike.
NPMemberIt’s not like people regularly using site can’t see the cyclists or don’t expect them. More an ignorance of how to drive around cyclists with the odd ‘Mr Angry Man’ mixed in.
NPMemberI had a cycle lane preacher this morning who tried to overtake me using the right turn lane at the 8th St/Fermi roundabout but had to abort as I wasn’t hugging the gutter. As it turned out he works a few offices down (and of course the overtake saved him absolutely 0 time) I pointed out his shit driving to be told ‘should have been in the cycle lane’. Definitely some campus wide driver education needed!
NPMemberFor me it’s about the priority, in particular having to give-way across side roads. I can stay on the main road and sit at 20mph, only having to worry about the roundabout (which you very rarely have to stop for). Or I can use the path and have to slow down outside ESA, the roundabout, goods delivery, while dodging pedestrians coming off the bus.
When you’ve been on the road most of the way up to site it doesn’t really make sense to leave just for the last mile unless it is more convenient (which it isn’t).
NPMemberAlthough it sounds like it wouldn’t apply in this case, do you think Diamond and RAL would be prepared to remove the parking permits for members of their staff who behave like this? Perhaps encouraging the various organisations on campus to message their staff would be beneficial.
