An update on Campus cycling issues:
Cycle to Work Day – This Wednesday (19th June)
We are still looking for volunteers to be ride leaders for the group rides at Didcot (07:15 and 07:50) and Grove (07:30 to meet up with the Wantage ride). If you can help out please contact HarBUG a.s.a.p: web@harbug.org.uk
Please support the group rides even if it is not your usual commute time. Whether you are on the group ride or not, do call in at the Harwell Pavilion, register your ride and get a free breakfast and a drink.
Fingers crossed for the weather.
Sustrans – Support Cycling to Work
Sustrans have started a ‘Support Cycling to Work’ campaign for a national cycle to work standard for workplaces. You can read more and sign their petition at: Sustrans – Support Cycling to Work.
Campus Cycle Survey
HarBUG have agreed to carry out a survey of cycle traffic to the campus. We propose to carry this out soon (before the school holidays). We cannot announce the date of the survey as this would not be fair or a true picture of cycling. We will not be stopping cyclists, just counting numbers and it is proposed to do this at three points:
- At the campus end of the Winnaway by the A4185. This will capture all road traffic along the A4185 to the campus and those using the Winnaway.
- At the top of Hagbourne Hill out of Upton at the junction. This will capture traffic from the Didcot direction using the Sustrans route 544 and those who choose to cycle on the roads via Chilton and the A34 junction.
- At the top of the slope by Tank Farm on Sustrans route 544. This will capture traffic from the Wantage direction.
We will use data collected at the Cycle to Work day to back up the survey data in terms of where people travel in from and how regular (names will not be passed on). We propose to monitor from 07:00 to 09:30 to capture the majority of cyclists. If you would like to help out carry out the survey, so we can have a couple of shifts at each point, please can you contact HarBUG: web@harbug.org.uk
Oxfordshire Transport Challenge
You may have had an email about this year’s Oxfordshire Transport Challenge (if you registered last year) which starts on Monday 24th June. Last year HarBUG heavily promoted the cycle challenge around the campus and companies on the campus did very well and even won two of the classes. This year HarBUG will not be promoting the challenge for the following reasons:
- We have been organising the Cycle to Work day and did not receive notice of the challenge until a couple of weeks ago.
- This year it is not just a cycle challenge, you can also log miles travelled by bus, train, walking or car share. Because of these extra modes of transport there is less enthusiasm for HarBUG, a cycling group, to really push the event.
If you want to promote the challenge for your organisation please do, it would still be good to see Harwell Oxford companies do well.
Events
Finally don’t forget to have a look at the events on the web page. Uptonogood is this Saturday with very few tickets left. A new Winchester to Wantage ride has been added.
If you know of any local cycling events you think should be included please contact HarBUG: web@harbug.org.uk
